Speyside BUTTERFLY...It is a rare thing!

The butterfly first appeared when Berry Bros. & Rudd, London’s oldest wine and spirit’s merchant needed a new tasting table for fine whisky and spirits. The brief for the tasting table required it to have as much depth, character and authenticity of provenance as the spirits being tasted.

The table was designed using two adjacent planks from the same tree, which have mirror image patterns, knots and swirly grain. The planks are oriented like butterfly wings, each side mirroring the other. Along the table’s outer edge both planks retain their natural waney edge following the organic natural grain and shape of the tree.

The centre line is a contrast. It is a straight cut that shows the geometric vertical spine supporting the two symmetrical planks. The end grain of this vertical spine gives the table rigidity and shows Elm’s growth rings.

The timber was sourced from Sykes Timber.

The table was made at L’Atelier Joinery.

The Speyside Butterfly table is now visible at Berry Bros. & Rudd during shop hours at 1a St James’s Street, London SW1Y 5HZ.
