Flint wines limited

In wine making the Terroir is the most important thing. Your location is the starting point. The surroundings, soil, exposure and even drainage are the most important things. They affect your product and the experience that you give to your customers. The skill and knowledge of local pickers, farmers, wine makers and blenders all contribute.

It was the same for Flint wines in Kennington, London. They sell wine on behalf of some of the best Burgundian wine makers from an office. When it comes to their business they act like good wine makers. They could have moved to a new location, ready fitted out in someone else’s taste. 

Instead they looked to their terroir. 

They made the best of their site, not a hillside in France but a long thin ground floor space in a South London conservation area. They asked their neighbours to see who had the skills to help. 

They asked us to design the space.

We flipped the old arrangement on its head. Seeing the potential to animate the street, the tasting room was moved to the front and placed in the shop window. To keep this important room clear a secret butler’s pantry was hidden in behind.

The design is restricted to natural materials. Oak shelves, terracotta tiles, corten planters, and limewashed walls.

This natural palette and access to daylight and the rear garden all combine to improve health and wellbeing for the team.

 

The design team also saw the potential of an old abandoned slot at the rear and suggested moving the desks to the rear. Now Flint’s team all work in the rear of the space looking onto a new garden also designed by Mowat & Company. 

We brought in Local community gardeners, The Walworth Garden, to create and look after the space under their community and educational programme.

We selected furniture from Very Good & Proper, who are just 700m to the south and who manufacture in London.

We selected teracotta lights from Hand and Eye.
